Sarawak Museum (in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia)
The Sarawak Museum Old Building was built in 1891 and was extended to its present form in 1911. The building was especially built to permanently house and display local native arts and crafts and collections of local animals as mainly encouraged by the famous naturalist, Alfred Wallace, who was then collecting specimens in the country.
Since its inception, the building has undergone several renovations and alterations. It is rectangular, 44’ x 160’ with walls and pillars of bricks and roof of belian and concrete. It has European architecture of imposing edifice in Queen Anne style (Victorian period). The galleries are lighted by dormer windows on the roof which thus allow a great area of wall space.
During the Japanese Occupation, the museum was put under the direction of a sympathetic Japanese Officer. As a result, the museum suffered very little damage and remarkably little looting.
Today, with carefully planned renovation and proper maintenance, this old building is used as the centre to exhibit collections on the natural history of Sarawak. The ground floor of the museum holds the natural history collection and specimens of Sarawak fauna – reptiles, mammals, birds, etc, all expertly prepared and mounted for display. The west wing of the museum houses Shell exhibition - petroleum industries of Sarawak.
The first floor displays exhibits of ethnographic artifacts such as models of longhouses of the various ethnic groups in Sarawak, musical instruments, various kinds of fish and animal traps, handicrafts, models of boats and others. _________________ http://felixheng.fotopages.com |

Indera Brahman | Balai Rong Seri
The Balai Rong Seri built in 1668. It was built buy the Muslim Chinese soldiers of Manchu Dinasty. China Town (Pekan China) nearby Alor Setar originated by these soldiers.
The order to build this Balai Rong given by Sultan Muhiyuddin Mansor Syah ibni Sultan Mahmud Syah Malacca. He was known as Boromokot, Sri Tammaraja II, Cau Pija Kersan according to Benua Islam Ayuthia ruling Emperor record.
Muhiyuddin Mansor Syah ibni Sultan Mahmud Syah Malacca was married to Princess Hang Li Po and the son-in-law of the ruling China Emperor at that time.
The tombs of Puteri Hang Li Po and her daughter, Nang Che Puan situated in Alor Setar, next to Alor Setar fire station and TDC office. His husband's tomb is in Royal Tomb of Langgar (Makam Diraja Langgar).
During the construction of the Indera Brahman, King of Kubang pasu, Paduka Seri Sultan Sulaiman killed as many as 10 of these Chinese soldiers (believed to be an act of protest). He then cooked and ate them. Their bones then gathered near Istana Bukit Tinggi.
This history twisted over times and turned out to be a tale of Raja Bersiong (Canined King). The script for the film Raja Bersiong wrote by Tunku Abdul Rahman is a tale version, with many hidden agendas. Sultan Sulaiman then summoned to be judged by Sultan Muhiyuddin Mansor Syah and found guilty. Sultan Muhiyuddin Mansor Syah said “Raja Tui yangkam belot yukbat” mean, Raja Sulaiman traitor, failed to put yurself resigned.
He ran for hiding to Singgora (Songkhala, Thailand, which was under Siamese government at the time). Sultan Muhiyuddin Mansor Syah ordered King of Acheh, Tunku Saaban Thani (known as Hang Tuah in Malacca) to kill the traitor. And the traitor was killed. Another film script to expand this tale by Tunku Abdul Rahman is for film Hang Tuah.
The ruins of the traitor's palace still can be seen at Taman Tabung Haji, Kepala Batas, Kedah. Local people told me that the visible palace is just the entrance. It was carved deep inside Bukit Tinggi, but the Thais bombed it with British help, and it is no longer passable. We actually had LOTR sort of carved palace The Thais burnt every manuscripts in every palaces the found during 5 years intrusion, including original version of Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa, which denied the fact that Siamese founded the land of Siam Lancang, not Thais.
ps - Thais & Siames are different race, with different language & religion. Small group of people in northern Malaysia speaks Siamese, which is totally alien to Thais in Thailand. _________________ http://nusantarian.fotopages.com |
